Even our thoughts and emotions are energy. During our childhood we start collecting information that determines our programming. Genetic, social and cultural influences will contribute to this programming. Over the years these beliefs we collect will impact the way we use our energy. We hold the information in our body  and it determines how the energy moves through our chakras (energy centers). Oftentimes, our chakras either become blocked or unbalanced and energy healing helps to release those blocks AND bring awareness to what caused it.
