Workshops
From the Inside Out - Yoga and Experiential Anatomy of the Heart Space with Patricia Videgain
IN-PERSON ONLY! From the Inside Out - Yoga and Experiential Anatomy of the Heart Space with Patricia Videgain
June 11-12
Saturday 2:30-5pm ET
Sunday 1-4pm ET
In this two-day workshop, Patricia will help you engage with the anatomy of the rib basket, ribs, thoracic and cervical spines, the upper limbs, the head, and the organs of the chest cavity (the heart and the lungs). She will also help you experience your breathing mechanisms, i.e. muscles and pathways of the breath. In addition to that, she will help you to work with the heart as both organ and spiritual hub.
Located near the center of the chest and to the left, the heart is made up of a muscle called the myocardium, which encloses two distinct parts separated by the thick ventricular septum. Each half contains two cavities: the auricle and the ventricle. The right side sends de-oxygenated blood to the lungs, and the left side receives re-oxygenated blood back from the lungs.
When we do asana, the circulatory pathways do not remain static. Stretching the muscular and fascial layers of the body not only lengthens the musculature but also helps make the arteries more tensile. Patricia will teach asana from an experiential and developmental perspective, making connections to enhance your understanding of this very important center of the human structure.
“The true fruit of yoga is not a material achievement of performance. Yogis never measure the intake of oxygen. That is not what they are interested in. The yogi’s interest is to keep the head and the heart clean through the harmony of breath, and this is achieved through the practice of pranayama." B.K.S. Iyengar, The Tree of Yoga
This class is appropriate for students with back issues and scoliosis, and Patricia will help you to modify as needed for any particular condition you are working with.
Hips and Hamstrings with Liza Toft FULL SERIES
Hips and Hamstrings with Liza Toft In- Studio 5-Part Series
Wednesdays 12:00–1:30pm
May 4, 11, 18, 25, June 1, 8
In this series, we will be exploring the connections and balance between the hips and the hamstrings. Giving extension to the back of the legs and the inner groins can give us freedom in other areas of our bodies where we may feel restricted. This 5-class series builds on Liza’s previous series on the hips but stands on its own as well. All levels welcome.
Liza Toft - CIYT is one of Samamkaya's newest and most talented faculty members. Her sensitivity in her yoga practice and teaching is one of her great strengths. Much of Liza's insight into her students' practices evolve from her personal experience with healing her own body. Yoga for Spinal Fusions and Scoliosis with Jen Krakowsky Full Monthly Series
Yoga for Spinal Fusions and Scoliosis with Jen Krakowsky
Monthly hybrid in-studio series June 7, July 5, August 2, September 13
For those with spinal fusions for scoliosis, a general yoga class can feel like an intimidating place. In this class, we will create space in our minds and bodies for an appropriate and safe yoga practice for fused spines. With simple and accessible modifications to basic yoga poses as well as gentle breath practices, we will work to strengthen, lengthen and celebrate our fused spines in a safe and welcoming environment. A full yoga practice is possible without all the deep backbends and twists we see on the covers of magazines! Instead of feeling limited by our fused spines, we will explore how, if approached with attention and care, our spines can teach us so much about our bodies and our minds.
For this class, it’s best to have a wall space and stable chair you can use as well as some basic props (or substitutions), like yoga blocks, blankets and a strap. Students must be at least 6 months post-surgical fusion and have been cleared by their surgeon to participate in general yoga or exercise classes.
*Please note this package does not include the trial class on May 3*
VIRTUAL Stability in the Joints with Jaki Nett FULL WEEKEND
IN-STUDIO Spinal Health: Causes and Solutions for Back Pain and Spinal Weakness with Bobby Clennell FULL WEEKEND
Spinal Health: Causes and Solutions for Back Pain and Spinal Weakness with Bobby Clennell
Online and In-Studio!
May 21 Hip Openers for Women:
By cultivating mobility in the hips, groins, and lower back we can free the energy locked in the pelvis and create health in the pelvic organs and lumbar spine. We will learn how healthy and mobile hip joints influence the hormone system and help us reduce low back pain.
May 22 Strengthening the Back:
A healthy spine is key to the health of the whole body. In this class Bobby will focus on poses that strengthen the legs; condition the muscles to better support the spine and withstand stress, and re-educate how the back is used.
Bobby Clennell has been teaching Iyengar Yoga for over forty years. She is a core faculty member of the Iyengar Yoga Institute of New York and teaches workshops throughout the United States and around the world.
Bobby began practicing yoga in London in the early 1970s while working as a costume designer and animator. In 1976, Bobby (along with husband, Lindsey, and sons, Miles and Jake) made her first trip to study with B. K. S. Iyengar in Pune, India. She has returned every two years to continue her study. She earned an Iyengar Yoga teaching certificate in 1977.
In the 1980s, Bobby's interest in women's issues was sparked by her studies with Mr. Iyengar's daughter, Geeta Iyengar. While Mr. Iyengar was teaching the main class, the women who were menstruating were sent to the back of the room to work more quietly with Geeta. This experience awakened Bobby to the need for a woman's yoga practice.
She is the creator of a short film, entitled Yantra, based on the movements of B. K. S. Iyengar during his own asana practice. Bobby Clennell lives in New York City.
