Helgi walks the talk of facing challenge herself. She spent 15+ years as a lawyer before transforming her career (plus health, lifestyle & relationships). Inspired by loss, she has published some groundbreaking writing about trauma. She has been coaching plus teaching mindfulness & movement for over seven years.
In addition to coaching, Helgi does advocacy and training for trauma-informed approaches to law.
She’s also a published author. Among her writings, Helgi is the co-editor and co-author of a forthcoming book on trauma-informed lawyering to be published in 2022 by the American Bar Association (law practice management division).
Bio:
Helgi Maki is a graduate of University of Toronto Faculty of Law with an M.A. from Carleton University (Norman Paterson School of International Affairs). She joined the Ontario Bar in 2003 and the New York Bar in 2005. A former large law firm partner, she now works in legal innovation consulting & coaching. She has acted as a consultant for a leading legal technology (and law-related data analytics) company, worked in public policy and done various types of trauma training including on trauma patterns with Mark Wolynn. (She has also assisted with training other practitioners about trauma.) Helgi advocates for trauma-informed lawyering to increase access to justice, improve client service design and support lawyer wellbeing. Her work is featured in the Canadian Supreme Court Law Review and other justice publications. She has spoken at numerous justice and legal conferences and workshops in the US and Canada.
