A duplex ultrasound scan to assess the function of the one-way valves in the veins of the leg. If the one-way valves are not working effectively, gravity can pull the blood down the leg, leading to distended and tortuous surface veins, or varicose veins. Increased fluid can also occur , causing swollen ankles and feet, skin discolouration and skin breakdown into non-healing wounds, or leg ulcers. Phlebitis, or surface vein clots, can also occur resulting in localised pain and tenderness .
