The UBC Tax Assistance Clinic for Students was founded in 2002 and has been helping students and low-income families with preparing income tax returns. The UBC Tax Assistance Clinic for Students is under the Canada Revenue Agency’s Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP). The objective of the CVITP is to help eligible individuals who are not able to prepare their income tax and benefit returns by themselves. It is intended to ensure that all taxpayers have equal access to the tax system.
This appointment is for your 2019 tax return only; if you would like assistance with other returns, please book another appointment for each tax year return you would like to file. We only provide tax returns for the previous 4 years. Service prior to 2016 tax returns will not be offered at our clinic.
The UBC Tax Assistance Clinic for Students runs Monday 9:30AM to 4:30PM, Tuesday 9:30AM-3:30PM, Wednesday/Thursday, 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM and Friday, 9:00AM to 4:30PM, February 24 to April 3, 2020. All appointments are held at the UBC Life Building (Student Union Building, Old SUB), Room 1501 (Multi-Purpose Room)**
Please note: Our tax volunteers are NOT tax professionals and are only trained to help with simple tax returns and to answer basic tax questions. If you have a complex tax situation of if you are seeking professional tax help or advice, we recommend visiting a professional tax company instead such as H&R Block.
Prior to booking an appointment, please review the eligibility requirements and preparation checklist.
If you are eligible and would like our help in preparing your 2019 tax return:
- Please book a thirty minute session on our appointment system. Booking more than 1 session prevents other clients from signing up for an available appointment. Please refrain from doing so as some clients need this opportunity.
- UBC TACS only completes tax returns for ONE year for ONE person for each registered appointment. If you file a tax return for this year AND would like to have your spouse’s tax return done or tax returns from several years ago done as well, you must sign up for another appointment.
- Most tax returns should take a maximum of 30 minutes of your time. If you think your return is complex i.e. delinquent filers (have not filed past year returns), please book a ONE hour appointment.
- Solely registering for an account does not guarantee an appointment. You must register into the system AND sign up for a time slot in order to secure an appointment.
- If there are no slots currently available, please continue to check back as there may be cancellations or we may release more slots in future. Alternatively, you can drop in at our clinic. Please note that clients with scheduled appointments will have priority. Clients who drop in will be served on a first-come first-serve basis.
NOTE: If you need to cancel your appointment, please do so 24 hours in advance for clients and 48 hours in advance for volunteers or supervisors. In order to maintain clinic operational efficiency, we reserve the rights to refuse future service to no-show clients.
