This workshop will introduce students to the various assessments used by substance abuse counselors in recovery. This session will explore the statistics regarding the relationship between employment and substance use and the barriers that those in recovery often face. Students will learn how to support a client in obtaining proper work documentation, apply for jobs, and gain necessary employability skills. Community resources for employment and educational opportunities will be shared.

Community agencies that address food insecurity, housing needs, homeless support, legal services, and health care will be shared. Each student will receive a community resource guide and contact information.

Life skills training is an important component of a substance use recovery program. Clients benefit from practicing the essential skills needed for dealing with common adversities of life in a healthy and productive manner and without returning to drugs or alcohol in times of hardship. This training will guide substance use professionals to strategies that will help them assist clients with acquiring important life skills; such as, practicing self-care, planning and cooking nutritious meals, etc.

This session will reintroduce the many challenges associated with maintaining ethics and boundaries in recovery support professions. The importance of personal maintenance of high standards of personal conduct will be discussed. Topics will include: maintaining professional parameters in providing services, clear roles of addiction specialists, core recovery values and ethical conduct, confidentiality, etc. Real-life scenarios will be presented and discussed.

It requires an understanding that ambivalence about using drugs or alcohol provides a barrier to wanting to change. This training will provide skills to develop a collaborative partnership that builds intrinsic motivation. The principles of Motivational Interviewing will be practiced and refined.

They will learn the common relapse triggers; such as, withdrawal symptoms, relationship problems, stress, and loneliness. Strategies for recognizing and addressing signs of relapsing will be practiced. Tools will be provided to help clients deal with feelings and situations that lead to relapse.

This workshop will refresh issues of ethics in the role of substance use professional. Content will be focused on laws of mandated reporting and confidentiality. Discussions will incorporate basic rules that govern different roles in clinical organizations. Scenarios regarding legal and ethical issues will be introduced. Students will understand how to work in accordance with the ethical guidelines within their own organization and the medical community at large.

In this session, students will explore the use of various substances by youth. Research data will include prevalence, age of onset, and short- and long-term effects. Students will examine the developing adolescent brain and the effects of substance use on brain development.
