Get your hands on the way folds work in the traditional Japanese art of paper folding - origami, which interestingly rests at the intersection of technique, skill, design, meaning and aesthetics. Where are we a thousand years later - what does modern origami look like? Can origami be sculptural? We'll develop individual folding patterns based on grids and corrugations, and then move to designing and executing a temporary paper installation where we dwell on design and the act of creating together.

A comprehensive introduction to screen printing set up, techniques, registration, and troubleshooting for you to get your design printed! Participants will create a stencil of their digital or hand drawn two-color designs of a maximum dimension of 8" x 10" each and practice printing with silkscreens to get their projects printed.

This is a course to introduce making jewelry using the laser cutter. No prior experience with the laser cutter or jewelry making necessary. Students will be intoduced to the laser cutter, and how to use it to create pieces that can be finished into jewelry. Students will then be shown basic jewelry construction methods. Students are encouraged to bring any ideas/ designs they may have and while we have stock jewelry findings, students may bring their own if they have them.

In this course we would cover the steps involved in completing a manuscript ( drafting, layout, editing, formatting, peer reviewing), publishing a manuscript (registering the work to the Library of Congress, assigning metadata, assigning an ISBN, distribution, printing), techniques for unconventional writing, options after publishing, and self-publishing vs traditional publishing. There'll be lots of opportunities for Q&A and alternative publishing techniques.

This workshop is for anyone interested in using a CNC Router for digital fabrication, specifically the ShopBot for computer-controlled cutting and routing. The course covers an introduction to the ShopBot, Computer-Aided Design software to design projects for the machine, creation of 2D tool paths for the machine using VCarve Pro, and basic machine operation and safety. You'll learn how to safely operate the machine yourself, so that you may use the it independently after completing the the workshop.

Take a cyanotype class at AS220 Industries with Andre Lee Bassuet. Otherwise known as sunprints, though we don’t need the sun when you have a UV exposure unit at Community Studios! Learn how to prep the materials needed to treat fabric and paper and come away with several prints by the end of this workshop.

This is a quick and fun introduction to bookbinding in miniature format. Students can use decorative paper and colorful thread to personalize their tiny books. No prior experience necessary. Students will learn three types of bookbinding using glue and non-glue methods, and samples of 3 tiny books; the accordion, pamphlet and Japanese stab binding. Students can bring decorative papers or items for collage. We encourage you to bring your own bone folder and awl but we'll have a few available to use.

Get certified to use the ABDick Offset Press in this introductory class. Colorful 'zines, single-page artists' books, posters, and flyers can all be created in large quantities using the Printshop's Offset Press. You will learn how to run the ABDick 9850 Offset Press - a commercial press capable of creating Hundreds of prints in a matter of minutes. Finishing Processes Including will be covered using our pneumatic folding machine, using our saddle stitch stapler, and trimming on the guillotine.

Use 3D modeling to unpack and explore family and community memories through virtual worldbuilding. This will not be your usual SketchUp course -- we'll break all the rules, no straight lines, and you'll be working from an old family or archival photo to craft yourself into a memory. In this workshop, students will learn how to make cloth wrapped clamshell boxes. These boxes are a great way to store and protect prints, photographs, drawing, or anything else you may want to keep in a box. We will go over materials, measurements, wrapping techniques, and design possibilities. At the end of the workshop each student will have a completed clamshell box and an understanding of how to continue making clamshell boxes on their own.

NOTE: The class is for an Advanced Beginner, meaning they have taken a few classes before! In this class we will focus on learning and understanding the rudiments of ballet - line and placement, while also learning musical phrasing of the ballet combinations that are given in class. I always strive to give a class that is relaxed and open, yet always with a focus to learn. The class is open to all ages and I am always supportive and encouraging with teaching this beautiful art form.

CI focuses on the relationship between bodies & space - falling, spirals, lifts, rolls, and standing still, leaning back to back, & laying on the floor. This class centers beginners & people new to the form with guidance & reflection to support building fundamentals. No experience necessary, open to all levels!

The emphasis of this class will be directed toward learning and developing both technical skills, and aesthetic sensibilities at a beginner level. The fundamentals of contemporary dance technique will be stressed along with rhythmic proficiency, and artistry. Movement quality, energy, and rhythm will be explored while also working toward increased strength and flexibility.

Intermediate Level Ballet barre and center, taught from a contemporary standpoint, with attention to anatomical safety and awareness, and a nod to somatic practice. Continued development of dynamic alignment, carriage of the arms, articulation of the feet and hips, increasing one's repertoire of steps in various combinations, and knowledge of the ballet vocabulary. We'll explore and expand on beginning foundations, however, this class will not introduce those movements; previous experience preferred.
